Together, let’s save the African penguin

The Pairi Daiza Foundation is proud to
support SANCCOB (Southern African
Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal
Birds) in its crucial mission: the protection
of the African penguin and other seabirds
in need. This South African organisation is
dedicated to the conservation of threatened
coastal birds by providing the care and
support they need.

Each year, approximately 2,000 birds –
injured, sick, orphaned or affected by oil
spills – are taken in at SANCCOB’s specialised
centres in Cape Town and Gqeberha. Rescue
operations begin in the field, where rangers
monitor key penguin colonies and identify
animals in distress. The rescued birds are
then transferred to rehabilitation centres,
where they receive individual care and
are prepared for their return to the wild.
Before being released, they are fitted with a
passive transponder to enable post-release
monitoring.
RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, SANCCOB ACHIEVED AN IMPRESSIVE MILESTONE: 107 AFRICAN PENGUIN CHICKS THAT
WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED WITHOUT HUMAN INTERVENTION WERE SUCCESSFULLY HATCHED,
HAND-REARED, AND THEN RELEASED ON THE BEACHES OF SOUTH AFRICA. AT THE SAME TIME,
THE TWO REHABILITATION CENTRES PROVIDED CARE FOR 1,924 SEABIRDS.
