Help orphaned primates in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo

Chimpanzees, with whom we share 98%
of our DNA, are currently threatened
by poaching, the illegal wildlife pet
trade, and habitat loss. Classified
as “Endangered” by the IUCN, they
are at the heart of the mission of the
J.A.C.K. sanctuary in Lubumbashi.
The sanctuary works to combat this
crisis by caring for and rehabilitating
confiscated primates, with the long-term
aim of reintroducing them back into
protected natural habitats. It also runs
awareness campaigns to help reduce
wildlife trafficking. With support from
the Pairi Daiza Foundation, several
nursery facilities for orphaned infant
primates have been built, along with
a security camera system to strengthen
site security.

RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN SEPTEMBER 2025, TWO YOUNG CHIMPANZEES, TAMI AND LUCY, WERE RESCUED WHILE
BEING ILLEGALLY HELD FOR TRAFFICKING BETWEEN THE DRC AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN
REPUBLIC. AFTER BEING SEIZED BY THE AUTHORITIES, THEY WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE
J.A.C.K. SANCTUARY, NARROWLY ESCAPING A TRAGIC FATE.
SEVERELY TRAUMATISED UPON ARRIVAL, THEY WERE IN A CRITICAL PHYSICAL AND
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITION. THANKS TO THE CARE THEY RECEIVED AND THE SUPPORT
OF A FOSTER MOTHER, THEY ARE NOW SHOWING ENCOURAGING SIGNS OF RECOVERY,
EMOTIONAL STABILITY, AND SOCIAL REHABILITATION.
