Building a safe future for
marine wildlife in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean coastline is home to a rich diversity
of marine species. Many of these are increasingly under
pressure from human activity. Sea turtles, cetaceans, rays
and seahorses all play a vital role in maintaining the balance
of marine ecosystems, yet their populations are increasingly
threatened by bycatch, pollution and vessel collisions.
In this context, the rapid rescue and care of animals in
distress are key measures to reduce mortality and improve
scientific understanding. Along the Valencian coast, this
system relies on a well-structured network for intervention
and monitoring.
In 2025, the Pairi Daiza Foundation further strengthened
its commitment to marine biodiversity by supporting the
Fundación Oceanogràfic in Valencia, an internationally
recognised centre dedicated to marine wildlife conservation,
research and awareness. The support is specifically directed
towards the ARCA del Mar centre.
The centre’s exceptional teams work directly in the field:
they rescue injured marine animals, coordinate their
transport, provide treatment and rehabilitation, and collect
essential data to better understand and monitor population
trends. A significant part of their work is also dedicated
to awareness-raising, both among the general public and
local stakeholders such as fishermen.
The results clearly demonstrate the impact and effectiveness
of the programme, with several hundred animals cared
for and released each year, alongside regular clean-up
operations and educational initiatives.
