Stem cells for wildlife conservation

Since 2022, Pairi Daiza has partnered with Revatis, a spin-off from the University of Liège specialising in cell
therapy and regenerative medicine, to advance wildlife conservation. An innovative technology developed by
Revatis makes it possible to culture stem cells from muscle microbiopsies weighing just a few milligrams.
While this process has already proven effective in numerous domestic species, the collaboration with Pairi Daiza
has enabled the collection of samples from wild species, including bison and several feline species. These samples
are collected during anaesthesia procedures already scheduled for other veterinary care, avoiding any additional
intervention.
Initial findings are promising and open up new possibilities for preserving genetic diversity, developing therapeutic
applications, and studying energy metabolism. They also offer considerable potential for research, particularly for
species in which in vivo studies are difficult. In the long term, these cells could even contribute to the reproduction
of endangered species, offering new hope for biodiversity conservation.
