Sneezing for science

Pairi Daiza is taking part in an innovative European research
project aimed at better protecting the health of marine
mammals. The project, coordinated by the Vienna Zoo, focuses
on the early detection of nasopulmonary mites in pinnipeds
using a gentle and stress-free approach.
These microscopic parasites are invisible to the naked eye
but can settle in the respiratory tract and cause serious health
problems. As they are still difficult to detect at an early stage,
this research aims to develop a new, non-invasive diagnostic
technique that fully respects animal welfare.
At Pairi Daiza, the focus is on two iconic species: walruses
and Steller sea lions. Thanks to close collaboration between
keepers, veterinarians and researchers, the animals have been
trained to sneeze on command into small sterile collection
boxes. A simple behaviour, yet extremely valuable for science.
The collected mucus is then analysed for traces of these
nasopulmonary mites.
Through this project, Pairi Daiza contributes to a better
understanding of pathogens affecting marine mammals, as
well as to the development of innovative diagnostic tools that
are both effective and animal-friendly.
RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, WORK CONTINUED ON THIS NON-INVASIVE SAMPLING METHOD. SIX BATCHES
OF SAMPLES WERE SENT FROM PAIRI DAIZA, HELPING TO VALIDATE THE RELIABILITY OF THE
DETECTION METHOD.
