The Polar bear, an iconic species of the Arctic, depends heavily on sea ice for movement, hunting and reproduction.
Climate change is placing severe pressure on this habitat: sea ice cover has declined by 12.85% per decade. As
a result, the Polar bear is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
The Pairi Daiza Foundation works in partnership with Polar Bears International (PBI), the world’s leading organisation
dedicated to the conservation of Polar bears and their habitat. Together, they support a scientific research project
examining the impact of climate change on the Polar bear population in Hudson Bay (Canada).
Pairi Daiza and its Foundation are recognised by PBI as an “Arctic Ambassador”. This designation reflects the
quality of the Polar bear habitats, the Park’s commitment to combating climate change, and its efforts to raise
public awareness of threats to biodiversity.
