Revealing the hidden diversity
of wild bees at Pairi Daiza

Alongside the honey bee, wild bees also play an essential role as pollinators. They contribute to the reproduction of
many flowering plants and are therefore essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. However, their populations
are increasingly threatened by pesticides, pollution and the loss of natural habitats. Green spaces such as gardens
and zoological parks can therefore serve as important refuges, thanks to the diversity of plant species they support.
With this in mind, Pairi Daiza and the Zoology Laboratory of the University of Mons launched a collaboration in
2025 to map the wild bee species present in the Park for the first time. This initial study immediately revealed a
remarkable level of biodiversity: sixteen species were identified, including six bumblebee species and ten solitary
bee species.
Building on these promising results, the research will be expanded in 2026 to gain a deeper understanding of
the pollinator communities present in the park. Other important insect groups, such as butterflies and hoverflies,
will also be included in the surveys. These studies contribute to a better understanding of Pairi Daiza’s role in
supporting local biodiversity while strengthening long-term efforts to protect pollinators.
