Improving the detection of infectious
diseases transmitted between animals
and humans to protect public health

In 2025, Pairi Daiza took part in the Q-fever project, carried out within the European initiative “One Health for
Surveillance”. This research aims to improve the monitoring of Q-fever, a disease that can be transmitted between
animals and humans.
The project explores simple and non-invasive methods, such as analysing ambient air in areas housing sheep
and goats, as well as studying small rodents that may play a role in spreading the bacterium responsible for the
disease. The aim is to gain a better understanding of transmission routes and to assess potential exposure risks
in environments accessible to the public.
The results obtained in 2025 are reassuring: the bacterium was not detected either in the air samples collected
within the Park or in the rodents that were examined.
By linking animal health, public health and the environment, this project highlights the importance of an integrated
approach to improving the detection and prevention of infectious diseases.
