Innovating to protect the genetic
diversity of animal species

Since 2025, Pairi Daiza has supported the
Stem4Biodiversity project led by the University of Antwerp.
This research initiative is developing innovative assisted
reproduction techniques to help safeguard endangered
species. By advancing stem cell research and reproductive
biotechnology, the project seeks to preserve genetic
diversity, a key factor in ensuring their long-term survival.
The project explores a pioneering approach that
uses body cells from deceased animals, such as skin
cells, instead of reproductive cells. This opens up new
possibilities for assisted reproduction as part of a broader
conservation strategy. Initial research is conducted on
domestic species such as pigs and cattle, whose biology
is well understood, before the techniques are adapted
for wild and endangered animals.
Stem4Biodiversity is also investigating ways to simplify
the preservation and international transport of these cells.
As part of this initiative, Pairi Daiza provides biological
samples from animals living in the Park under veterinary
supervision. Through this collaboration, Pairi Daiza
actively contributes to the development of innovative
tools for wildlife conservation and the protection of
endangered species.
