The Shoebill
To better understand and protect a rare species

The Shoebill captures the imagination and
inspires considerable curiosity. Despite its
iconic appearance, this species remains
relatively little known and is particularly
sensitive, both in the wild and in captivity.
To address these challenges, Pairi Daiza,
together with scientific partners, is working
to improve understanding of the species’
biology and to optimise its care, with the
aim of making a stronger contribution to its
conservation.
This project is being carried out in
collaboration with the University of Osaka.
The objective is to bring together and analyse
more than fifteen years of data collected at
Pairi Daiza on the breeding and management
of Shoebills. By combining historical data with
more recent observations, a comprehensive
knowledge base is being developed covering
topics such as reproduction, chick rearing,
and behaviour.
