Safeguarding the Northern
yellow-cheeked gibbon

According to the IUCN, the Northern yellow-cheeked gibbon is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red
List. In Vietnam, it is estimated that only around 800 individuals remain. Agriculture, logging and road construction
are destroying and fragmenting their habitat. This tree-dwelling ape, known for its exceptional agility, is also
threatened by poaching for its meat, use in traditional medicine practices, and the illegal pet trade.

RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES IN KON HA NUNG (VIETNAM), WHICH IS HOME TO
AROUND 180 TO 200 GIBBONS, WERE FURTHER EXPANDED. DURING THE FIRST HALF OF
THE YEAR, PATROL TEAMS COVERED MORE THAN 2,180 KILOMETRES AND DOCUMENTED
42 VIOLATIONS. IN ADDITION, FOREST RANGERS RECEIVED FURTHER TRAINING IN
MONITORING AND SURVEILLANCE. NEW PROTECTION MEASURES WERE ALSO INTRODUCED,
AND A WORKSHOP BROUGHT TOGETHER ALL RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS TO DEVELOP A
MANAGEMENT STRATEGY FOR THE PERIOD UP TO 2030.
