Help protect the world’s
largest lizard: the Komodo dragon

This remarkable reptile from Indonesia is threatened by
the loss of its natural habitat due to agricultural expansion,
forestry, and tourism development, as well as poaching.
The Komodo dragon is listed as Endangered on the IUCN
Red List. It is estimated that only around 3,500 individuals
remain in the wild. Approximately half of them live within
Komodo National Park, a protected area of 1,800 km²
established specifically to safeguard the species and its
habitat.
The Pairi Daiza Foundation supports the Komodo Survival
Programme, an Indonesian organisation that has been
working to protect this extraordinary species since 2007.
Its work has helped to improve our understanding of the
Komodo dragon’s biology, particularly through the collection
of data on populations, habitats and movement patterns
in the wild. In addition, patrols are organised to protect
both the animals and their environment. Local communities
are also actively involved, for example through awarenessraising activities in schools.

RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, MONITORING OF THE SPECIES CONTINUED ON THE INDONESIAN ISLAND OF
FLORES, OUTSIDE KOMODO NATIONAL PARK. USING CAMERA TRAPS, RESEARCHERS
CONFIRMED THAT THE KOMODO DRAGON IS PRESENT ACROSS AREAS WHERE IT COEXISTS
CLOSELY WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES. AT THE SAME TIME, MORE THAN 30 INDONESIAN
FIELD STAFF RECEIVED TRAINING IN SCIENTIFIC MONITORING TECHNIQUES, SIGNIFICANTLY
STRENGTHENING LOCAL CONSERVATION CAPACITY.
