Protect the binturong
in Palawan

The binturong, also known as the “Bearcat”, is a
carnivorous mammal recognised for its distinctive
appearance and nocturnal behaviour. It inhabits the
forests of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines.
Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, this species
faces numerous threats: deforestation is causing
habitat loss, while illegal trade leaves it vulnerable
to capture for the exotic pet trade or for its fur and
meat.
As part of its conservation work, the Pairi Daiza
Foundation is actively committed to protecting
the binturong in Palawan in the Philippines, in
collaboration with AB Conservation. This partnership
aims to improve knowledge of and safeguard this still
little-known species, notably by collecting valuable
data on its habitat, movements, and behaviour.
These insights make it possible to implement targeted
and effective conservation measures, based directly
on field conditions.

RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, ONE OF AB CONSERVATION’S PROGRAMMES HELPED STRENGTHEN THE LONGESTRUNNING FIELD MONITORING STUDY EVER CONDUCTED OF THE BINTURONG IN ITS NATURAL
HABITAT IN THE PHILIPPINES. IT ALSO ENABLED, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE DOCUMENTATION OF
THE SPECIES’ REPRODUCTION AT ONE OF THE STUDY SITES, MARKING A BREAKTHROUGH IN
THE UNDERSTANDING AND CONSERVATION OF THIS ELUSIVE MAMMAL.
