Restoring the Red panda’s habitat
in Nepal

Listed as Endangered by the IUCN, the Red panda faces an even greater extinction risk than the well-known
Giant panda. Fewer than 10,000 individuals are believed to remain in the wild, and their population continues to
decline. The Himalayan mountain forests where the Red panda lives are being destroyed by agriculture, forestry
and road construction, leading to habitat loss and fragmentation.
Eastern Nepal, on the border with India, contains a critical area for the species’ survival: the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung
region. This area is affected by the same environmental pressures but is essential for many endangered species,
as it acts as a link between different wilderness landscapes.
In response to this challenge, a project led by the Red Panda Network in collaboration with the Pairi Daiza
Foundation aims to restore several hectares across this region. The objective is to create an ecological corridor
for the Red panda, as well as for other species sharing this ecosystem, such as the Clouded leopard, the Asiatic
golden cat and the Asian black bear.
