The Yellow-bellied toad
A reintroduction with a long-term outlook

The Yellow-bellied toad is a small, distinctive amphibian, easily recognisable by its bright yellow belly with black
markings and its heart-shaped pupils. Once widespread in Wallonia, this species has been in sharp decline since
the end of the 19th century. The main causes were the loss of suitable habitats, water pollution, and the spread
of invasive species. By the late 1980s, the species had almost completely vanished from Wallonia.
To preserve this iconic species in our region, Natagora launched a reintroduction programme in 2006. The first animals
were released back into the wild in 2008. Since 2016, Pairi Daiza and the Foundation have been actively involved
in this project: young animals are bred in captivity and later released into suitable nature reserves and Nassonia.

RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, 154 ANIMALS, ALL BORN IN THE SAME YEAR, WERE RELEASED IN NASSONIA.
BEFORE RELEASE, EACH INDIVIDUAL WAS CAREFULLY PHOTOGRAPHED AND IDENTIFIED. THIS
WILL ALLOW THE POPULATION’S DEVELOPMENT TO BE CLOSELY MONITORED IN THE FUTURE.
