United in shaping the forest of tomorrow

What if we restored, rewilded and re-enchanted the forest? It all began with a dream, which has since grown into
an ambitious initiative: Nassonia.
In the heart of the province of Luxembourg (Belgium), Nassonia is emerging as a flagship example of public–private
co-management of the Saint-Michel Freyr state forest (1,684 hectares). The project is the result of a partnership
between the Pairi Daiza Foundation and the Department of Nature and Forests (DNF) of the Public Service of
Wallonia (SPW).
Nassonia responds to today’s and tomorrow’s challenges in the management, protection and appreciation of
forest ecosystems, as well as to the evolving relationship between people and nature. The project aims to give
nature more space while exploring new ways of understanding, protecting and engaging with forest environments.
Nassonia is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of natural habitats and the species they support. Its
goal is to foster a balanced ecosystem capable of functioning as independently as possible, with minimal human
intervention. By building on the forest’s own dynamics and natural processes, the project develops and tests
innovative approaches to strengthening forest resilience and ensuring the long-term protection of these valuable
environments.
