Restoring the bearded vulture
to the Vercors

Born on 18 March 2025 at Pairi Daiza, the
young Bearded vulture Troubadour illustrates
conservation efforts for a rare and still fragile species
in Europe. His birth is the result of coordinated
breeding efforts as part of the EEP programme. The
teams at Pairi Daiza closely monitored the chick
and its parents, while minimising disturbance in
order to support his natural development.
After his first few weeks, Troubadour was transferred
to Puy du Fou for an acclimatisation phase aimed
at gradually preparing him for life in the wild. He
was then relocated to the Vercors massif as part
of the LIFE Gyp’Act programme. Housed in an
aviary with a female, he became familiar with his
new surroundings before the aviary was opened
on 15 July 2025. The following morning, he took
his first flight, a key milestone marking the end
of a long preparation process and the start of his
return to the wild.
RECENT PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
IN 2025, THE BIRTH AND REINTRODUCTION OF TROUBADOUR DEMONSTRATE THE SUCCESS
OF COORDINATED CONSERVATION EFFORTS ACROSS EUROPE. SINCE HIS FIRST FLIGHT,
SCIENTIFIC MONITORING CARRIED OUT BY THE LIGUE POUR LA PROTECTION DES OISEAUX
(LPO) HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO TRACK HIS MOVEMENTS AND ASSESS HIS ADAPTATION TO
THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
