HELPING orphaned primates
IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €16,220
2022 > PRESENT
With 98% genetic similarity to humans, chimpanzees are among
our closest relatives. Yet, habitat loss and illegal hunting for
meat and pets have pushed them to the brink, earning them an
‘Endangered’ status from the IUCN. Located in Lubumbashi, the
JACK primate sanctuary is dedicated to combating trafficking,
providing care and rehabilitation for confiscated animals, and
eventually reintroducing them into secure wild areas. Educating
the public to reduce primate trafficking forms an essential part
of its mission.
The Pairi Daiza Foundation has been supporting JACK since 2022.
Several nurseries have already been built to house young orphaned
primates overnight (temperatures can drop to 5°C during winter
in the southern hemisphere). With our help, security at the site has
also improved thanks to the installation of surveillance cameras.
