Karine Mahefarisoa, winner of the 2023 Pairi Daiza Foundation Grant, studies the impact of anthropogenic pressures
on the health of lemurs. Lemurs are highly sensitive to human-induced pressures like deforestation, mining, and hunting.
Understanding how these threats impact their physiology is vital for effective conservation. This study postulates a
direct and proportional relationship between anthropogenic pressures and parasitic infection rates in lemurs.
Karine Mahefarisoa compares parasitic loads and intestinal biomes of lemurs in several regions of Madagascar.
In addition, samples from Pairi Daiza lemurs (which are dewormed) are used as a negative control to validate the
results obtained in Madagascar.
