Rosaria Santoro, a PhD student in conservation biology at Manchester Metropolitan University and winner of the Pairi
Daiza Foundation Grant for Biodiversity and Conservation Research in 2022, studies the vocalisations of several
species of felines using bioacoustic techniques. The aims are twofold: to update the census of felines in the wild and
to optimise their welfare in wildlife parks.
In the spring of 2023, she spent several weeks recording feline vocalisations at Pairi Daiza. Given the difficulty of
recording feline vocalisations in the wild, turning to animals in wildlife parks means that a higher number and wider
variety of calls can be recorded. It also makes it easier to collect other data, such as the size, age, sex and history
of each individual, which are important parameters for individual acoustic analysis.
