Pairi Daiza has joined forces with the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund and Sciensano in the fight against avian influenza,
or bird flu. This epidemic, caused by the H5N1 virus, affects both poultry and wild birds, resulting in the culling of
several million birds and decimating wild populations. It affects almost all continents, including Europe, Asia, the
Americas and, to a lesser extent, Africa.
Wildlife parks are also concerned about the risk of spreading avian influenza, because birds living among humans
can be infected with the virus through direct or indirect contact with wild birds, such as geese.
Since 2022, cooperation between the three partners has led to an innovative vaccination programme being introduced
at the zoo. This targets the birds most at risk, such as Australian pelicans, wild peacocks and African penguins.
