Takins are little-researched endangered mammals that live in isolated parts of the Himalayas. Because of disturbances
in their natural environment, the conservation of takins in wildlife parks plays a crucial role in the preservation of
the species.
Pairi Daiza is participating in a study on the social behaviour of takins. Six times a month, our team of keepers films
our herd of takins for about ten minutes, without disturbing them. Behavioural analysis, together with information
on the weather, season and enclosure design, for example, will enhance our overall understanding of the natural
behaviour of takins, which are still little understood on account of their remote and inaccessible habitat.
