Environmental DNA refers to the genetic traces left by organisms in their environment, such as hair or faeces. This
makes it possible to identify the species present in a habitat by analysing these traces without having to capture or
observe the animals directly, thus providing an accurate biological inventory. Through research, this technology is
being extended to soil samples, offering the potential to detect the presence of species through basic soil sampling.
Pairi Daiza has supported this research by allowing scientists to collect samples from several enclosures, which
are particularly valuable because of their detailed species records. The “Earth” project, led by e-biom, leverages
environmental DNA technology to promote biodiversity conservation.
