THE VOYAGE OF THE swifts:
AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY BETWEEN AFRICA AND EUROPE
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €9,000
2024 > PRESENT
Each year, common swifts and pallid swifts embark on a spectacular odyssey: more than 10,000 km separate them
from their wintering grounds in Africa and their breeding sites in Europe. Capable of flying continuously for nearly
10 months, these iconic birds defy the laws of endurance. Nowadays, however, their future is threatened by the
effects of climate change and the gradual disappearance of their habitats.
In an effort to enhance knowledge and conservation of these fascinating species, a large-scale scientific initiative is
being conducted in Belgium and Portugal, targeting four main colonies: two in each country.
A collaboration between the Pairi Daiza Foundation and Bluegreen Labs has enabled common swifts to be fitted with
geolocators. These ultra-light trackers allow valuable data to be collected on their migratory routes, their stopover
sites and the environmental pressures they face along the way.
In parallel, the growth of juveniles is studied through regular measurements and analysis of their excreta, revealing
key information on insect availability and ecosystem health.
