protecting manatees
IN SOUTH AMERICA
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €22,748
2024 > PRESENT
Sometimes referred to as “sea cows” on account of their placid behaviour and the ecological role they play, manatees
are large aquatic herbivores that make a valuable contribution to the health of freshwater and coastal ecosystems.
Found in several South American countries, the West Indian manatee now faces increasing threats, such as habitat
loss and fragmentation, pollution, incidental capture, poaching and the effects of climate change.
To tackle this emergency, the Pairi Daiza Foundation is supporting a University of British Columbia-led project that
consolidates existing data on species distribution and habitat, identifies priority conservation areas, and coordinates
efforts at the regional level.
