NESTS COMBINING
&
OF BIODIVERSITY FOR BIRDS IN BRUSSELS
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €75,757
2019 > PRESENT
Since 2019, CAP48 and the Pairi Daiza Foundation have supported La Ferme Nos Pilifs in initiatives dedicated to
wild bird conservation. In 2019, nesting boxes with 69 cavities for sand martins were built and installed along the
Brussels Canal, providing an artificial habitat that mimics their natural nests in sandy banks. This initiative, inspired
by similar success in the United Kingdom, led to the first breeding pair in 40 years being observed in Brussels in
2021. In 2022, a bird hide and drink station, accompanied by educational panels, were installed at La Ferme Nos
Pilifs to encourage birdwatching and provide the birds with access to water. In 2023 and 2024, 31 sparrow poles,
fitted with nest boxes, were set up in several parts of Brussels to support the population of domestic sparrows, in
decline due to the loss of natural cavities for nesting.
La Ferme Nos Pilifs provides useful and rewarding employment to 145 people with disabilities.
