LET’S HELP PROTECT
THE WORLD’S LARGEST LIZARD,
The Komodo dragon
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €7,000
2019 > PRESENT
This impressive reptile, which is native to Indonesia, is a victim of habitat degradation caused by farming, forestry
and tourism development, not to mention poaching. Classified as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List, the species
now numbers only 3,500 individuals in the wild. Half of them live in the Komodo National Park, a 1,800 sq. km
reserve created to protect the Komodo dragon and its habitat. The Pairi Daiza Foundation supports the “Komodo
Survival Program”, an Indonesian non-profit organisation committed to protecting the Komodo dragon in its natural
habitat since 2007. Their work helps us deepen our understanding of the species’ biology by collecting data on
the population, habitat, and movements of Komodo dragons. Monitoring patrols have also been set up to protect
the animals and their environment. Lastly, local communities are involved from an early age, particularly through
awareness-raising campaigns in schools.
