2024 REPORT
VIETNAM
LET’S PROTECT THE NORTHERN
yellow-cheeked gibbon
AMOUNT COMMITTED TO DATE: €11,000
2021 > PRESENT
Classified as Endangered by the IUCN, the northern yellow-cheeked
gibbon has an estimated population of only 800 individuals in Vietnam.
Habitat loss driven by agriculture, logging, and infrastructure development
poses a critical threat to its survival. This arboreal primate, known for its
extraordinary agility, is sadly hunted for its meat and for the illegal pet
trade. It is also used in traditional medicine. The Pairi Daiza Foundation
is involved in a conservation programme for the northern yellow-cheeked
gibbon in its natural habitat, the Kon Ka Kinh National Park, a 42,000
hectare forest reserve in central Vietnam. The reserve boasts incredible
biodiversity, with no fewer than 42 species of mammals, 160 species
of birds and 51 species of reptiles.
