What if we restored and rewilded the forest and reawakened our connection with it?
This was the idea behind an ambitious project: Nassonia.
In the heart of the Belgian province of Luxembourg, the Nassonia
project has become an exemplary public-private co-management
initiative for the Saint-Michel-Freyr national forest (1,684 hectares).
The result of a collaboration between the Pairi Daiza Foundation
and the Nature and Forest Department of the Walloon Public
Service (SPW), Nassonia stands as a response to contemporary
and future challenges in the development, protection and understanding of our forest ecosystems and the intrinsic relationship
between humans and nature.
Rooted in a long-term commitment, Nassonia seeks to restore and
preserve natural habitats and the species that inhabit them. The
project is part of a long-term vision aimed at creating a balanced
ecosystem that eventually will no longer need humans to manage
it. This timescale, aligned with the rate of growth of the forest and
its natural processes, allows Nassonia to experiment and develop
innovative models for forest resilience, ensuring the sustainability
of our woodlands.
