The Borneo orangutan is one of three species of orangutans, endemic to Borneo’s forest ecosystems. Victims of deforestation and poaching, their population has declined by more than 60% over the past 60 years. In recent years,
the Pairi Daiza Foundation has contributed to the realisation of two flagship projects for this species: planting 11,000
trees in a degraded region in southern Borneo and reintroducing 9 orphans after a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Since 2023, the Pairi Daiza Foundation has continued its work to protect and restore the habitat of Borneo orangutans in association with the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF). This has included a forest fire prevention project
in the Sebangau National Park, home to the largest protected population of Borneo orangutans anywhere in the
world (6,000 individuals). Each year, the forest faces increasing threats from peatland fires, primarily caused by
illegal drainage channels dug in the past for logging. These channels dry out the peat, making it highly flammable.
To reduce fire risk and limit their impact, efforts are focused on blocking these channels to rewet the peat, while also
strengthening the capacity of local patrol teams to respond swiftly to fire outbreaks.
