Each year, around 2,000 injured, sick or orphaned birds, as well as birds harmed by oil spills, are treated at SANCCOB’s specialised hospitals in Cape Town and Gqeberha. The rescue process begins in the field, where rangers
monitor large penguin colonies and identify birds in distress. These are then transported to rehabilitation centres,
where they receive dedicated care and are prepared for their return to the wild. Before being released, they are
fitted with a passive transponder so they can be tracked in the wild.
