Advocating FOR CONSERVATION
United
FOR BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity conservation only makes sense if it is envisaged on a global scale. By participating in international
programmes, Pairi Daiza and its Foundation contribute to large-scale conservation efforts, transcending national
borders to address global biodiversity challenges.
As a member of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the Pairi Daiza Foundation aligns itself
with the world leader in nature conservation. IUCN is recognised for its role in assessing the conservation status
of species through the Red List of Threatened Species, the global benchmark for conservation status. By partnering
with IUCN, we are part of the global dialogue on conservation, contributing to conservation strategies based on
sound scientific data.
In addition, EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) is a network of more than 400 zoological institutions
across Europe and the Middle East, united around the conservation of endangered species. At the heart of this
mission, EAZA Ex-situ Programmes (EEPs) are crucial initiatives that allow breeding and management strategies to
be developed for these species. These programmes ensure that animal populations in wildlife parks are healthy and
genetically diverse. This means that the zoos and aquaria participating in the EEP work together, under the guidance
of dedicated coordinators, to plan births, transfer animals between institutions and, in some cases, reintroduce them
into the wild.
Why is this so important? In the wild, many species face threats such as habitat loss, poaching and climate change.
For some, the situation is so precarious that they could disappear forever. Populations maintained ex situ under the
EEPs can serve as “safety nets”, giving these species a chance for long-term survival and recovery.
Aside from managing populations in wildlife parks, EEPs are also the driving force behind scientific research projects,
conservation efforts on the ground and educational programmes.
